Ngora School of Nursing and Midwifery |

Background The school is Non-Government and Non Profit Making Institution. It is on the Church of Uganda foundation that started as far back as 1961. The school was forced to close in 1987 due to insurgency in the area. It was re-opened in 1995. It first started by training midwives and later on nurses were also admitted. In November 2004, the school started admitting Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing students yearly up to date. Enrolled Nursing/Midwifery courses were phased out in May 2006. Location The school is found in Kumi District 17 km along Kumi-Serere road. Kumi District has an approximate population of 393,438 people. The catchment area for trainees covers districts of Kumi, Soroti, Lira. Apac, Katakwi, Kaberamido. Pallisa, Mbale, Kapchor Totoro, Busia, lganga. etc. |

Jinja District is bordered by Iganga District to the East, Kamuli District to the North, Mukono District to the West and Lake Victoria to the South. 1.1 Background
Butabika School of Psychiatric Nursing is the only school specialized in training mental health nurses in Uganda. It is located at Butabika Hospital, Nakawa division in Kampala district. The school was opened in 1960 with enrolled psychiatric nursing, and a capacity of 60 students-22 residents and 18 non residents. In 1967, an extension course for already enrolled psychiatric nurses was introduced. This course enables enrolled psychiatric as well as direct entrants from secondary schools to become enrolled psychiatric nurses. |

BACKGROUND TO MULAGO SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY The school was founded in 1995 under the British colonial government in line with Government Policy of training health workers to address promotive, preventive, rehabilitative as well as curative care in Ugandan communities, the school started with the training of enrolled nurses, and then upgraded to registered nursing level in 1962. Midwifery started in 1967. Ownership Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery is a public training institution and is owned by the Ugandan Government under the Ministry of Education and Sports. Mandate: Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery derives its mandate from the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001, to conduct courses or programmes in Diploma Nursing, Diploma Midwifery for direct students and Diploma Registered Comprehensive Nursing for Extensors. Competence Based Training (CBT) approach to Residential or Distance assisted with electronic or Distant assisted with electronic or print satellite or similar firm of transmission of information as provided by the Act.  |

Background
Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing first opened on 9th September 1972 as a Government School to train both Nurses and Midwives at enrolled level with a capacity of 120 students. In 1998 the school started training the Comprehensive Nurses at enrolled level and hence the name, Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing. The training of Enrolled Nurses and Midwives continued alongside the comprehensive Nursing and it has been phased out this year 2007. The pioneers for comprehensive nursing in set 1(one) were 23 and 21 completed the course. Currently we have reached set 7 with the admission of 166 students this academic year(2007). |
