Background
Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing first opened on 9th September 1972 as a Government School to train both Nurses and Midwives at enrolled level with a capacity of 120 students. In 1998 the school started training the Comprehensive Nurses at enrolled level and hence the name, Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing. The training of Enrolled Nurses and Midwives continued alongside the comprehensive Nursing and it has been phased out this year 2007. The pioneers for comprehensive nursing in set 1(one) were 23 and 21 completed the course. Currently we have reached set 7 with the admission of 166 students this academic year(2007).
School Mandate: The school was established as a health training Institution to train Nurses and Midwives and now Comprehensive Nurses. Location
The school is located at Makanga Hill, which is about 1 km from the Kabale main Post office. It is adjacent to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, neighbouring the District Administration offices, District Director of Health Services offices (DDHS) and the Golf course
Academic Staff Currently there are four trained tutors, one senior Accountant and one secretary on the Government payroll. The following are employed by the school: One (1) qualified tutor — Temporarily (Full time) Two (2) clinical instructors (Full time) Six (6) clinical instructors on part-time basis Two (2) librarians One (1) Assistant Accountant and Twenty three (23) group employees. The available infrastructure include:
One (1) administration block with 5 offices Two (2) classroom blocks Two (2) demonstration/practical rooms One (1) in door games room One (1) Dinning Hall with a kitchen attached One (1) recreation/assembly hall One small library Two (2) semidetached houses for the warden and assistant warden Six (6) dormitories with a capacity of 286 students. Four staff houses located outside the school compound
1) Academic: Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing is among the few schools which are to implement the Post-Basic Diploma course in Comprehensive Nursing in May 2007. With the upgrading of the school to a Diploma level, the building/plot being requested for will be put to maximum use. It will be utilized as an accommodation to the students of Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing.
2) Infrastructure: The school is among the fifteen (15) schools to be rehabilitated by the Europeans Union and the breaking of the ground is due in May 2007. In December 2006 we received Books on the essential list and we are grateful to European Union. This has greatly boosted the library stock. The students and the staff are motivated to teach and learn respectively.
3) Transport: The school owns two (2) vehicles. (i) A two (2) year old sixty — seater TATA Bus was received from Ministry of Education and Sports 2 years ago plus a topup from the school. It assists to transport students to and fro the practicum sites around Kabale and the neighbouring districts like Kisoro. (ii) A six- year Mini Bus which transports students to the nearby Health Units during the Practicum period. This goes to places like Rugarama, Rushoroza and Kyanamira Health centres. It also shuttles the staff on duty to the school and during the follow-up of students in the Health centres. |
