NAME OF THE SCHOOL: MBALE SCHOOL OF CLINICAL OFFICERS

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION: Situated in eastern Uganda (northern division of Mbale municipality) on Mbale Kurni road a distance of about 256 km from Kampala:
Area: 10 hectares. The school was transferred from Masaka, to Mbale in 1958. The first Principal of this school was a Medical Officer from Europe. He handed over to a Nursing Officer who later on handed over to Mr. Sumata (Rip) in 1969. Initially the school was training male Medical Assistants and at that time the minimum entry requirement was 0 level- with Credits in Science subjects. In 1982 the Admission of female students for the course started, the pioneer female students were only 5 and all of them perfomed very well in the final exams and this paved way for other female students to be admitted to the school. Since then (1982) the admission of female students has continued to increase from five up to the current date (30 female students current admission) 2003. In 1997 the curriculum of the school was revised and the entry requirement was stepped up to A level with the minimum requirements of 2 principal passes and one subsidiary pass in science subjects and the title of Medical Assistant was changed to Clinical Officers as more topics were introduced to the curriculum. The demand for Clinical Officers has been increasing year after year and as a result the school enrollment has increased from 60 students in 1970 to the present 258.
STAFFING The school has five resident tutors of whom one is a female however, the school gets part time teachers (teaching support) and there are 20 non-teaching staff in various areas and activities like. - Accounts - Store - Kitchen - Secretarial department - Drivers - Gatekeepers - Compound cleaners e.t.c
INFRASTRUCTURE The school has 4 blocks for accommodation of main students and 4 blocks for female students however, the blocks for male students have bigger capacity than the female blocks hence the number of 90 female students and 180 male students all the male blocks are partitioned into cubicals. Other buildings in the school include - Administration block - Academic block (storey building) Kitchen plus the dining hail - The store - Library - Tutors accommodation. The resident tutors are accommodated in the school accept 2 due to in adequate accommodation facilities in the school.
TRAINiNG FACILITIES The school largely depends on Mbale Regional Hospital for the various specialized discipline like Medicine, Pediatrics Surgery Gyn and Obs , Pub Health for students practicals at all levels However community Health practice is carried out in the selected Health centers within and outside Mbale District that is Sironko and Pallisa District. The Classrooms are well furnished and spaecious.
TEACHING ILEARNING MATERIALS Most of the basic teaching and learning materials are available namely: Overhead projectors Slide projectors T.V. Screen and Video Deck. Chalkboard Butcher papers /Manilia papers Models for Anatomy and Physiology and other subjects like Nursing and first aid. - SECRETARIAL SERVICES The school is well equipped with computers, printers, a duplicating machine, Photocopying machine and relevant stationary. MANAGEMENT The school is Government owned. It was established and founded by the Ministry of Health. It was however transferred to Ministry of Education and Sports by the act of Parliament in 1997. The school is managed by a board of Governors which is concerned with the smooth running and operation of the school. The principal (Head) of the school is concerned with co-ordination, planning, and implementation of the school programmes. To facilitate management of the school major activities are assigned to tutors and non- teaching staff for example - Academic master - Registrar - Estate Officer - Community Health field work. - Welfare - Transport e.t.c. ACADEMIC BOARDS Two academic examination bodies exist in the school namely 1. Internal board of examiners for 1 and 2 years. 2. Final year students (3d) are examined by an external board of examiners.
RECREATION FACILITIES The school has both indoor and out door games which included: Chess Monopoly Darts Drafts Playing cards Table tennis D.S.T.V The out door games include: Netball Football Volleyball Shot put Javelin. |
