Background

The school is Non-Government and Non Profit Making Institution. It is on the Church of

Uganda foundation that started as far back as 1961. The school was forced to close in

1987 due to insurgency in the area. It was re-opened in 1995. It first started by training midwives and later on nurses were also admitted. In November 2004, the school started admitting Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing students yearly up to date. Enrolled Nursing/Midwifery courses were phased out in May 2006.

Location
The school is found in Kumi District 17 km along Kumi-Serere road. Kumi District has an approximate population of 393,438 people. The catchment area for trainees covers districts of Kumi, Soroti, Lira. Apac, Katakwi, Kaberamido. Pallisa, Mbale, Kapchor Totoro, Busia, lganga. etc.

Aim of the School
Prepare nurses and midwives at lower level with skill mix to competently meet the health needs of individuals, families and community in both a Hospital and Health Centre setting.


School Objectives
1.
To equip the learners with competencies in:
a. Providing nursing care to patients of all types.
b. Carry out or assist in practical procedures.
c. Managing and maintaining practical procedures in Hospital and Health units.
d. Offering primary health care services.
2. Preparing learners with some teaching skills to be able to facilitate students in School and hospital.
3. Assist the students develop skills in managing wards and health units.

School Finances
These are from two sources; the school fees and PHC Conditional Grants for
PHC Activities.


Achievements
Drastic improvement in performance in National Examinations.

 New 4th Tutor was recruited last year on July 2006.
 All Tutors and most of the Clinical Instructors attended computer course arranged by European Union.
 Minor repairs have been carried out and the school appears smart.
 European Union is happy and started renovation early in May 2007.
 A variety of relevant textbooks have been received from the European Union.

Constraints
1.
Meager resources for running the school.
2. Lack of transport for PHC activities. :
3. Lack of school houses for staff.


Future Plans
1. To start agricultural project of the school this year 2007.
2. Improvement in all school activities.


The availability of those funds has enabled the school to sail through its activities with some ease.
The continued support from the government through PHC grants shall continue helping the school meet its major obligations as outlined.
